Doc Howard's Distillery [Perry]
Join us in Perry, Ohio as we celebrate a Fermenting Ohio milestone... our first distillery! Admittedly, I've been somewhat avoiding the high test establishments as I know the least about them (it's easier and far more legal to homebrew). As I'm elbow deep in wine and beer tasting certifications, budget and time restrictions have pushed out my go at CSS (Certified Specialist of Spirits) to a later date, so I wasn't sure I'd even know what to do when approaching someone's crafted liquor. Doc Howard's Distillery proved itself to be the perfect place to start thanks to the owners who opened their doors, gave up a good portion of a busy production morning to give me a tour, talk shop and allow me ask a million questions.
Set back from the road, the distillery entrance will welcome you to a fascinating (and tasty) afternoon. I was lucky enough to be able to sit with Doc and Sherri Howard for a while and talk about how their distillery came to be. That interview will be available later this week, stay tuned!
There are seven available products to sample in the tasting room:
- Doc's Favorite Whiskey
- Tribute Whiskey-Bourbon Style
- Corn Whiskey
- Hot Poker Whiskey
- Maple Whiskey
- Golden Rum
- Spiced Rum
All were approachable and quite delicious, but here are my standouts:
- Corn Whiskey - I always always always give bonus points when someone can make something that I haven't tasted before, and this falls right into that category. Doc believes in a long mashing and fermenting period, which works wonders for his flavors. This was such a smooth sipper on its own, but later that evening I combined it with some fresh lemonade for an amazing end to the day cocktail. Really a must try when you stop in.
- Maple Whiskey - Smooooooooooooooth with a kiss of maple without being a flavor bully. Really lovely to sip, and looking at the website, you can reduce this to form a nice glaze for various meats, which gets nothing but love from Fermenting Ohio.
This was such a fun afternoon, Doc and Sherri made me feel more than welcome and I look forward to many returns here. Be sure to take a trip out to Doc Howard's Distillery, which is right up the street from the Lake Erie Bluffs metropark (combine both for an exceptional day! Though, maybe do the park first, some of these whiskeys are 45%...).
